Have you been told you have astigmatism?

Are constant headaches and eyestrain impacting your life?

Astigmatism is a common eye condition characterized by an irregular curvature of the cornea that causes blurry, fuzzy, or distorted vision.

While astigmatism can certainly be a nuisance, there is no reason to suffer from it. It can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or laser eye surgery.

Give Your Eyes the Care They Deserve

How We Can Help

normal eye and eye with astigmatism

  • Come in for an eye exam and we’ll determine what type of lens correction will offer you the clearest vision possible.
  • We’ll discuss all your treatment options so you can feel confident that you’ve chosen the best option for your visual needs and lifestyle.
  • During your follow-up visit, we’ll make sure that you’re comfortable with your new eyewear and we'll check that your new lenses are providing you with crisp, clear vision.

4 Ways to Treat Astigmatism

  • Prescription eyeglasses

Mild to moderate levels of astigmatism can often be corrected with eyeglasses that contain a unique optical power (cylinder) to combat blurry vision caused by astigmatism.

  • Toric contact lenses

Toric contact lenses are customized to your corneal shape and contain varying corrective powers throughout the lens. These soft contact lenses provide clear, sharp vision for people with mild to moderate astigmatism.

  • Scleral contact lenses

Scleral contact lenses are ideal for moderate to severe astigmatism. These specialized rigid lenses are designed to arch over your irregular shaped cornea and rest on your sclera (the white part of your eye), to deliver clear vision.

  • Laser eye surgery

If you’re looking to free yourself from eyeglasses and contact lenses, laser eye surgery offers permanent astigmatism correction. Candidacy for laser eye surgery depends on your age, and the type and severity of your astigmatism.

No matter your level of astigmatism, Fulghum Optometry in Lakeshore has the perfect solution for your needs.

Dr. Fulghum and his staff have taken care of our family's vision needs for many, many years and has ... always provided us with the very best care. Always concerned about our vision needs as the years went by. His referrals have also been top notch whenever additional specialty treatments were needed. We have always felt that our care and treatments have been the very best available. Most medical appointments are not the friendliest experiences we have, but this is not the case here. Always greeted with a smile and pleasant atmosphere. Thanks for all your hard work!

He is a very good person and a caring man. He always makes the visits fun and he shows an interest i... n you and your family. Okay Paul I wrote what you asked me to now when do I get paid? I’m just kidding on the last part but I told him I was going to put that in when I wrote his review to keep him humble. All kidding aside he’s a great doctor and an even better man.

I've been seeing Dr. Fulghum for over 30 years, starting with my recovery from major eye trauma and ... surgery. For over 3 decades Dr. Fulghum and his office have been excellent in their service and friendly in every interaction with me. Dr. Fulghum genuinely cares about his patients and their vision. I cannot recommend him more highly to anyone who is looking for an optometrist. He is a great optometrist!

I have been very pleased. Dr. Fulghum listens to your concerns, asks about your vision needs, and ta... kes the time individually with each patient. Very small office, only the one doctor and a few staff, but very accommodating.

I needed to get a piece of metal removed from my eye. The Dr. did an excellent job. My normal ophtha... lmologist was not in on Friday and he took me in as a new patient. I had a very pleasant visit.

Lovely staff! Great relaxing place. Dr. Fulghum is awesome. Scheduled a visit in under 24 hours, had... little to no wait. Very comfortable place. Is now my go to for all eye care.

I liked the experience I had at this doctors office one to two years ago. I had purchased my first p... air of bi-focal lenses and boy were they much needed. I do not wear glasses often so I must say I've worn these maybe 20 times since I've owned them. The only problem I have is the left side of the frame broke loose at the hinge. I am very careful with my glasses and always keep them in a case when not in use. This should never have broken. I tried to solder the two parts together but no luck.

Astigmatism Diagnosis Treatment FAQs

What does astigmatism do to your eyes?

Astigmatism occurs when either the cornea or the lens inside the eye has mismatched curves, causing the eye surface to be egg-shaped rather than round.

While astigmatism causes blurry vision at all distances, it can also cause:

  • Wavy or distorted vision
  • Eye strain
  • Headaches
  • Squinting
  • Poor night vision
How do you fix astigmatism?

If you have astigmatism, corrective lenses (contacts or glasses) specifically designed for astigmatic eyes are an effective way to correct your blurry vision. They contain your optical prescription along with a specific cylinder lens power to target astigmatism and provide you with crystal clear vision. Laser surgery is another effective option to correct astigmatism.

Why has my astigmatism worsened?

About 20% of babies are born with astigmatism. In most cases, it disappears by around age 5. In others, astigmatism can become permanent and even worsen over time, generally stabilizing once the eyes reach their adult size (at around age 20).
